Garmin announces strategic relationship with Alzheimer’s Research UK to empower people to reduce dementia risk and raise funds for life-changing research

Evidence suggests that keeping physically and mentally active can lower people’s chances of developing the condition

March 10, 2020– Garmin® International, Inc., today announced a three-year strategic relationship with Alzheimer’s Research UK, a leading dementia research charity dedicated to diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure. As ARUK’s official sporting sponsor, Garmin will encourage people to reduce their risk of developing dementia through consistent cardiovascular exercise, no matter their age or fitness level. The strategic relationship will promote the use of Garmin smartwatches as an effective means to track progress, stay motivated and promote personal accountability in pursuit of individual goals.

Theo Axford, Head of Marketing at Garmin UK, said: “We’re really thrilled to announce our strategic relationship with Alzheimer’s Research UK. Together we are determined to make a difference. We want to empower people to make simple lifestyle changes in order to help protect their health and reduce dementia risk. We’re looking forward to supporting all of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s sporting events and activities and want to encourage as many people as possible to take part.”

Under the agreement, Garmin will become the official sponsor of ARUK’s new virtual fundraising challenge, The Treble, which launches on April 1, 2020. The event will encourage people take on running, cycling and swimming challenges while raising funds for ground-breaking dementia research.

Lucy Squance, Director of Supporter Led Fundraising at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’re incredibly excited to be collaborating with Garmin. Dementia has a devastating impact on so many lives, but research can keep people connected to their families, their lives and themselves for longer. This strategic relationship gives us an exceptional opportunity to reach out to the public and offer them the support and advice they need to make positive lifestyle changes that could lower their chances of developing dementia. We can’t wait to see what we achieve together.”

Garmin and ARUK will work together to raise public awareness of the benefits of consistent cardiovascular activity in reducing dementia risk. Here are some fast facts:

*Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia

*Almost one million people in the UK are living with the condition. For each of them, their families and their friends the impact is huge.

*Research suggests that dementia cases could be reduced by up to one-third through lifestyle changes such as eating healthily, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping physically and mentally active.

*Only 34 percent of the public believes it’s possible to reduce their risk of developing dementia.
