Golding suffers cruel fate of Southern Ocean

After fighting his way up to first place and putting more than 30 nm between Ecover and his nearest competitor, Mike Golding fell foul of extremely high winds in the Southern Ocean, which despite his best efforts, dismasted his 60ft open and left all hopes of a Vendee Globe win dashed.

Mike now has the challenge of covering over 1000 miles to the nearest port without any sails or mast – the intrepid skipper was forced to cut the rig off of the mast as the weight of the felled structure was anchoring the yacht and putting the integrity of the hull in danger.

Here at Garmin we would like to wish Mike the best of luck on his journey back to port and are looking forward to helping him on his next challenge.
