Geocaching is a very simple pastime all you need is a home PC with internet access and a hand-held GPS system. By logging on to geocaching.com and entering your postcode, you can find where your nearest Geocaching site is.

Once you have found the geocache that you are interested in, input the waypoints (or coordinates) provided by the website into your GPS system and get outside to start your family adventure in the great outdoors.

Geocaches can vary in difficulty and size, from a simple log book sealed into a 35mm film canister to large boxes filled with geocoins, travel bugs and cuddly toys.

With over 700,000 caches to choose from world-wide there is no shortage of places to visit.

Andrew Silver Outdoor Product Manager for Garmin said: “Geocaching is the ideal way to encourage children and adults alike to enjoy the great outdoors at minimal cost.

“Garmin’s eTrex H starts from around £63 and can provide a whole summer full of activity. This is definitely an investment when you consider that a day trip to a theme park for a family of four could reach £120.”

Andrew added: “The only rule with Geocaching is respect: we ask our geocachers not to damage land or countryside and to always leave something behind in a cache if they remove an item.

“Geocaching is much more than just a treasure hunt as it teaches about the geography of land we live in as well as encouraging people of all ages, backgrounds and genders to have fun and get more active.”
