What is the culture like?

How is Garmin structured?
The global parent company is in Switzerland, but Garmin maintains operational headquarters in Olathe, Kansas.
What are the core business hours at Garmin?
8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the business operations teams and various shifts in our manufacturing and warehouse departments.
It says Garmin is in Kansas City. Is that Kansas or Missouri?
Garmin’s headquarters is in a KC suburb called Olathe, in Kansas, but when you fly into Kansas City International Airport (MCI), you actually are in Missouri (there is both a Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri). It is about a 45 minute drive from the airport to Garmin, which is next to Interstate 35, a major north/south highway.

If I accept a job at Garmin, how can I connect with other people?
For interns, Garmin hosts several activities throughout the summer, including outings to Worlds of Fun, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and laser tag.
For part- and full-time employees, Garmin also hosts regular outings, for full- and part-time associates, so employees can get to know one another.
There also is a group called GenKC that organizes ongoing events to help young professionals enhance their personal and professional skill set.

What is the dress code?
Although there is no company-wide dress code at Garmin, it is expected that associates dress appropriately for the work environment.
Any department specific dress codes or safety rules pertaining to dress must be followed.
When do my benefits start?
Benefits start the first of the month, after the day you start (i.e. if you start March 10, they will start April 1. If you start Jan. 31, they will start Feb. 1)
What holidays does Garmin observe?
Associates get 9 paid holidays every year.
How much vacation does Garmin offer its associates?
Paid time off is based on each associate’s anniversary date.
Full-time associates will be granted PTO as follows: Up to 15 days per year the first year through the fourth year of employment; up to 20 days per year in the fifth year through the ninth year of employment; and up to 25 days per year in the 10th year of employment and each year thereafter.
Rates are prorated for part-time associates.
Bereavement and jury duty absences also are recognized as well as Family Medical Leave of Absences (FMLA) and Military Leave of Absences.
When do I get my first check?
Garmin pays bi-weekly on Friday.
How often are associates paid?
Bi-weekly. Associates can use ADP Self-Service to receive online, paperless pay statements.
How are employees classified?
Garmin associates are either exempt or non-exempt. Exempt associates are paid a salary and do not receive overtime pay. Non-exempt associates usually are paid on an hourly basis and receive overtime pay in accordance with federal and state laws.
Associates also are classified as full-time or part-time. Full time associates are regularly scheduled to work at least 30 hours per week and are eligible to participate in Garmin benefit programs provided they qualify under the terms of the benefit. Part-time associates are regularly scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week and may be eligible to participate in certain Garmin benefit programs.
Garmin also may use temporary associates. Temporary associates are not eligible to receive holiday pay or participate in benefit programs.
How often are raises/reviews given at Garmin?
Performance evaluations are completed annually for all associates.
Are there opportunities for advancement within Garmin?
This varies by team and department, but there are opportunities for growth and advancement technically or as a manager.
How long do I have to wait until I can apply for a transfer to another department?
Do I have the opportunity to move within teams after I am hired?
Yes, this is looked at on a case-by-case basis.
