inReach: Getting the Right Map Data to Know Where to Hunt

When you’re out hunting during your game season of choice, there are many things to consider in order to have a successful and legal hunt. Among those considerations is making sure you and your group are hunting in the right place. Boundary lines can be confusing, and some hunting seasons and regulations differ by zone.

Garmin offers a practical solution to this challenge for inReach® device and Earthmate® app users. The Earthmate app — a GPS navigation and mapping application for mobile devices – comes with access to downloadable maps, U.S. NOAA charts, color aerial imagery and more. With an annual subscription, Earthmate Hunt Edition provides hunters with unlimited access to an additional set of cacheable hunting maps and layers for the entire U.S., including wildlife and game management units (GMUs), private and public land parcel data with owner names for many parcels, Public Land Survey System (PLSS) maps and more for planning or use during a hunt.

Choosing a Complete Hunting Map Solution

Available on iOS and Android, Earthmate Hunt Edition functions beyond the reach of cell phone service, enabling hunters to scout, plan, execute and review their hunts anywhere in the U.S. If you have an inReach Explorer®+, you can sync the Hunt Edition maps to view directly on your inReach device.

By pairing your mobile device (via Bluetooth®) with any inReach satellite communicator, the Earthmate app turns your mobile device into a true off-the-grid satellite companion. You can communicate anywhere in the world via 2-way text messages with friends, family or fellow hunters. You can also trigger an SOS if you find yourself in an emergency and communicate directly with a professional 24/7 rescue monitoring center via your inReach device or the Earthmate app.

During your hunt, you can record highly-detailed GPS track logs and use the breadcrumb trail feature to find your way back to camp or save for reference on future hunts. (Read more about how an inReach device is an essential tool during a hunt.)

If you’re considering which hunting map provider to choose, a significant difference between Earthmate Hunt Edition maps and onX hunt maps is that you get hunt map data for the entire U.S. with Earthmate Hunt Edition. You’d need to purchase and download separate maps for each individual state with onX. If you’re hunting in more than one state, you’ll save by choosing Earthmate Hunt Edition.

Downloading and Using Earthmate Hunt Edition

There are 2 ways to get the Earthmate app. Earthmate is included with the purchase of an inReach satellite communicator, or you can buy an annual subscription to use the Earthmate app as a standalone product.

An Earthmate Hunt Edition annual subscription is available for $39.95 (USD) via the Earthmate website and is good for a full year. The subscription will renew at the end of your subscription year automatically unless you cancel. If you’re already an inReach user, you can also buy an annual subscription to Earthmate Hunt Edition by visiting the inReach Explore site, selecting the Map tab and then selecting Get More Maps.

After purchase, the process for downloading Earthmate Hunt maps is the same as downloading other maps using the Earthmate app. (Find detailed instructions here.)
