If the team had a mascot, it would be

We don’t have a particular mascot, but our team is recognised by the five-finger Qhubeka salute. You can also see the Qhubeka hands on the back of our distinctive team jerseys.

Proudest moment of 2019

Taking 8 young men with disadvantaged backgrounds from the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy to the start of the TdF.

Team jokester

Shotaro Iribe, the current Japanese national road race champion

Team leader(s)

Giacomo Nizzolo, Michael Valgren, Victor Campenaerts, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Domenico Pozzovivo and Roman Kreuziger

Favourite pre-race song

Most of the riders have individual playlists that get them in the zone, but our drivers do a great job on the tunes on the team bus, generally.

Favorite moment in history

Winning our first ever stage of the TdF in 2015 with Steve Cummings on Mandela Day, a historic moment not only for us but for South African sports in general.

Cause(s)

We ride for Qhubeka, which gives people a helping hand by providing them with bicycles through learn-to-earn and work-to-earn programs. That’s what the hand on our race jerseys stands for.

Most humbling moment

The faces on all 27,000 kids in Africa when they received the Qhubeka bicycles we’ve been able to raise for them.
