Garmin Introduces GPS Receiver Targeting Automotive OEM Applications
OLATHE, Kan. November 18, 2003 — Garmin International,
Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), today announced that
it is introducing the GPS 18 OEM, a GPS sensor for OEM (Original
Equipment Manufacturer) applications. The device is targeted
to OEM clients for use in automotive, fleet vehicle, and electronics
applications where a small and highly accurate GPS receiver is
needed.
"Garmin has long been a leading provider of GPS solutions," said
Gary Kelley, Garmin’s director of marketing. "The
GPS 18 OEM allows our OEM customers to easily incorporate the proven
reliability, accuracy, and simplicity of Garmin GPS technology
into their vehicles and electronic devices."
The 12-parallel-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS receiver is available
in either CMOS-level serial or USB 2.0 full speed versions, and
comes with an integrated magnetic base. The tiny, round receiver
is 2.4 inches in diameter and weighs just ounces — making
it an ideal solution in applications where space is at a premium.
The GPS 18 OEM is offered in three different cable configurations:
A-style USB, DB-9 pin serial with 12-volt cigarette lighter
adapter (PC), or bare wire (LVC). All three versions feature
Garmin proprietary
output, and the PC and LVC configurations also offer NMEA data
output. The GPS 18 OEM comes complete with non-volatile memory
for one-time configuration, a real-time clock, and raw measurement
data output for sophisticated customer applications.
All versions of the GPS 18 OEM are expected to be available in
January 2004.
