UK Garmin traffic-enabled sat-navs come with a free lifetime subscription to this Traffic Messaging Channel for the UK, while traffic-compatible models can accept traffic data, available to purchase separately.

TMC delivers:

• Real-time, pan-European traffic information, using the most accurate and up-to-date sources (including the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Germany and Switzerland)
• Detailed information about traffic jams, accidents and roadworks on your route, estimated delay times and automatic re-routing for alternative congestion-free routes
• Information covering over 8,000 miles of motorway and trunk roads in England, Scotland and Wales

How does it work?

The Garmin traffic service uses a combination of cameras and feeds from reliable sources including the Highways Agency, police control centres, commercial radio stations and urban traffic control centres, to deliver up to-date and accurate information on traffic congestion.

Traffic information is then broadcast over a national network of FM radio stations, ensuring excellent reception of real-time traffic data directly to your Garmin sat nav.

The cameras are mounted approximately every four miles on every motorway in the UK and comprise:

• 3500 fixed infra-red sensors mounted on motorway over-bridges to automatically measure the flow rates of the road.
• 4500 Passive Target Flow Measurement 'blue pole' cameras installed at the roadside on trunk roads to accurately measure traffic flow speeds.

All congestion charging zone cameras in London, providing traffic flow speeds in the capital.
