The Garmin Marine Software Update 5.0 is a free¹ update that brings new features and functionality to your chartplotter while retaining the familiarity you have with your system.
New Features
Garmin’s Marine Software Update 5.0 makes your chartplotter more intuitive and requires fewer keystrokes between screens.
The update also greatly improves drawing speed for charts and provides better map performance, giving you quick access to information.
Even users who do not have BlueChart® g2 Vision cards can enjoy a 3-D perspective display. A compass rose overlay and smoother map detail improve navigation in tight harbors or open waters.
Span Your Entire Network
Garmin’s Marine Software Update 5.0 is an easy update – whether you’re updating your 400/500 series chartplotter or 4000/5000 series network chartplotter. Simply update via your compatible chartplotter and the data will reach the rest of the compatible Garmin marine products on your vessel.
As an added benefit for our 4000 and 5000 series chartplotters, we’ve also included support for our new GXM-51 Weather Receiver. And if you’re currently utilizing Garmin’s GHP-10 Autopilot System via NMEA® 2000, the update will allow you to engage the autopilot directly from your chartplotter.

GPSMAP 4000/5000 series
GPSMAP 400/500 series
You can work with your marine electronics installer or you can update your own device via SD™ card. If you're using an SD card, there are 2 options: Purchase a card directly from Garmin or download the software for free directly to your own card.
Option 1
Download from garmin.com
*If downloading, please ensure you are using an SD card with at least 200 MB of free space.
- Please find and download the software update for your device at the following link: http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp
- Connect an SD card reader/programmer to your computer and load the software onto a blank SD card.
- Download the software from the Updates and Download link, putting it directly on the card.
- Place the card into the SD slot on your primary device.
- Power on the device. Make sure all of the network devices are powered on.
- An "Update" tab will display on the screen. Scroll to this tab and click Select.
- When the update is complete, power off the device and remove the card.
The part number for all GPSMAP 4xx, 5xx, 4xxx, 5xxx devices is 010-00427-02.
Option 2
Order an SD Card
Please call 1-800-800-1020 to place an order for Garmin Marine Software Update 5.0 on an SD card. This will be an Operating System update and not a mapping update.
There is a $29 USD charge for the card (plus tax and shipping).
Keep the card for use on other devices. Do not return the card to Garmin.
The card will update any other device on the network. Make sure all your marine devices are connected and on when running the update. The update card contains a compatible software version for all of the devices, ensuringall of the networked devices will be able to communicate with each other.
- Place the card into the SD slot on your primary device.
- Power on the device. Make sure all of the network devices are powered on.
- The GPS device will recognize the card as a Unit Software update card. An "Update" tab will display on the screen. Scroll to it and tap Select.
- When the update is complete, power the device off and remove the update card.
